KAREN'S KORNER
By Karen Riggin
The weather is finally getting nice so it must be spring, right? But the calendar tells us it is summer and the days are starting to get shorter already! All the rain has turned the countryside to beautiful shades of green. I just hope it hasn't been too much rain for our farmers.
There is so much going on during the spring and summer that time has a tendency to whiz right by. Be sure and check out the "Calendar of Events" for Cando and Devils Lake on the inside of this newsletter.

FROM THE PRESIDENT'S DESK
By Terry J. Jorde
On July 4, 1776, we claimed our independence from England and Democracy was born! Every day thousands leave their homeland to come to the "land of the free and the home of the brave" so they can begin their American Dream. The United States is truly a diverse nation made up of dynamic people.
On July 4th Americans celebrate that freedom and independence with barbecues, picnics and family gatherings. It's America's birthday party and everyone is invited to celebrate our independence!
After enjoying backyard barbecues and parades, the best is yet to come- the fireworks display! Fireworks are one of the oldest and most stunning ways to commemorate America's birthday.
At CountryBank USA we celebrate our independence every day! We are your local independent bank!
Have a safe and enjoyable 4th of July!

SMILE
Smiling is infectious, you catch it like the flu.
When someone smiled at me today, I started smiling too.
I passed around the corner, and someone saw my grin.
When he smiled, I realized, I'd passed it on to him.
I thought about that smile, then realized it's worth,
A single smile, just like mine,
Could travel around the earth!
So, if you feel a smile begin, don't leave it undetected,
Let's start an epidemic quick, and get the world infected!
Lake Region
RELAY FOR LIFE IS A HUGE SUCCESS!
The 6th Annual Lake Region Relay For Life was held on May 31st and June 1st at Roosevelt Park in Devils Lake.
I want to thank everyone who participated in and donated to the American Cancer Society through the "Relay".
A special thank you to everyone on the CountryBank USA team; Devonna Brenno, Dixie Sander, Tiffany Arendt, Terry Jorde, Susan Kakela, Sallie Larson, Danae Hillebrand, Cindy Asleson, Jen Asleson and Kim Schall. They worked very hard selling raffle tickets on Pampered Chef gift sets and even had a rummage sale. By the way, the winners of the raffle were: Dennis Olson, Brenda Dick and Ken Nahinurk. The team also came up with quite a unique theme. They were the "CountryBank USA Gardeners - Weeding Out Cancer!"
I hope you had a chance to stop by during the Luminary Ceremony, which is absolutely breath-taking with over 10,500 luminaries lighting the track and walkways. And, perhaps you had a chance to hear Dr. Richard Johnson's message on his own personal battle with cancer. Dr. Johnson was the honorary Chairperson for this year's event and he gave a very dynamic presentation.
As I am writing this newsletter, I am very pleased to report that the total funds raised for this year's "Relay" are now over $179,900!!! There are still more funds coming in and when they do we will be over $180,000.
It would be nice if our "Relay" could repeat as #1 in the Nation again, but money isn't our goal - finding a cure for cancer is! But the way to find a cure is through research and that is what a great portion of the funds are used for. Dr. Johnson said it perfectly; "I firmly believe every little step, every dollar, every nickel kids put in the pot is going to help. Somewhere down the road we'll find a cure for this thing."
On behalf of all the committee members for "Relay", I extend a sincere thank you to each and every one of you.
Karen
