KAREN'S KORNER

Spring is a wonderful season. I love to watch the plants as they poke their little heads through the ground, bringing new life to the aftermath of a long winter. I enjoy watching the birds return to our back yard and listening to their chorus as they welcome the sunshine and warmer weather. The birds and squirrels are quite entertaining sometimes!

SYTTENDE MAI

Ya, sure-it's that time of year again! When spring arrives, it seems that Syttende Mai isn't far behind! My "17th of May" bush is budding out and hopefully will be in full bloom for this special day.

CountryBank USA will be celebrating Syttende Mai (Norwegian Independence Day) in Cando and Devils Lake, with an open house from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in both locations.

In Cando: Cecelia Boe will talk about the terrain in Norway and will display her beautiful Hardanger. Blood sugar and blood pressure testing will be available.

In Devils Lake: JoAnn Copeland will demonstrate rosemalling. Mercy Hospital Home Care will do blood pressure and blood sugar testing.

Both banks will be serving home-made, genuine Norwegian treats (and coffee, of course). So stop by for some conversation, great food, health screening and register for some nice prizes.

RELAY FOR LIFE

The 5th Annual Lake Region Relay for Life will be held on June 1st & 2nd at Roosevelt Park in Devils Lake. If you need any information on this please give me a call at 665-5000. CountryBank USA has the distinct honor of being one of the ORIGINAL 8 teams, and has participated every year. Our team captain this year is Kim Schall and her team members are: Terry Jorde, Sallie Larson, Dixie Sander, Paula Halvorson, Alisha Casey, Susan Kakela, Danae Hillebrand, Devonna Brenno and Cindy Asleson. Their theme is "The Prospectors-Banking on a Golden Cure".

I would like to extend a special invitation to anyone who is battling cancer or has been fortunate enough to have won the battle, to participate in the Survivor's Social and Kick-off Lap. Last year 102 participated. I would love to see that figure double this year!

The "Celebration of Life" activities for survivors starts with a cake & coffee social at 6 p.m. in the shelter at Roosevelt Park. Survivors will register in the shelter and draw their hand on the "Hands of Hope" banner. Each survivor will be given a special T-shirt and is invited to participate in the first lap of the event to "kick-off" the Relay at 7 p.m. We ask that survivors pre-register if possible. If you, or someone you know would like to participate in this special event you can register by calling the Relay's voice mail at 665-1003. Please register by May 15th if possible. Transportation will be available for those who feel they are unable to walk the entire lap, and we need this information as well.

For a donation of $5 or more you may purchase a luminary in memory or in honor of someone. You can contact any team member at CountryBank USA for a luminary.

DO YOU HAVE A COMPUTER? OR…..
ARE YOU INTERESTED IN GETTING A COMPUTER?

There are so many things that you can do with a computer.

You can E-mail your friends and family.
You can search for almost anything on the internet.
There are hundreds of games to entertain you.
And best of all…
You can do your banking from a computer!
We are very pleased with our web site and our on-line banking. We have worked extra hard on our site to make it simple to use and pleasing to the eye!

During the Senior Expo we will have a computer available and you will be able to go to our web site at www.countrybankusa.com and see just how easy searching the internet and on-line banking can be. Or, you can stop in at either one of our Bank locations and we will be happy to show you how the internet, e-mail, and on-line banking work. Try it. I'm sure you will really like it!

CHOCOLATE MATHEMATICS

This isn't hard, or long-just fun! Don't "FUDGE" by reading the end first!

1. First of all, pick the number of times a week that you would like to have chocolate-try for more than one but less than 10. So, pick any number from 2 to 9.
2. Multiply this number by 2 (just to be bold)
3. Add 5 (for Sunday)
4. Multiply it by 50 (go ahead and use your calculator if you want to).
5. If you have already had your birthday this year add 1751-if you haven't had your birthday this year add 1750.
6. Now-subtract the four digit year that you were born.

You should end up with a 3 digit number-the first digit of this was your original number (I.e., how many times you want to have chocolate each week). The next two numbers are your age.

I am told this will only work in the year 2001 so test your friends & relatives and have fun!
