KAREN'S KORNER

WELCOME TO SUMMER!

I was beginning to think that summer was going to bypass us this year! Hopefully we will be able to go a few days without rain or storms so things can dry out a bit. I really enjoy the outdoors with an occasional game of golf and gardening, so this long wet spell has really put a damper on my activities.

FROM THE PRESIDENT'S DESK

Terry J. Jorde, President & CEO

Independence Day celebrates the birthday of the United States of America. Founded July 4, 1776, with the signing of the Declaration of Independence, America is celebrating its 225th birthday this year.

CountryBank USA celebrates its independence every day! That's right…as a locally owned, independent bank we have a unique relationship with the communities that we serve…one that those large, out-of-state holding company banks will never understand. We are dependent upon our friends and neighbors and you, our customers, for our growth and success. That's why we work very hard at making sure that you're successful too! We thank you for the support that you have given us - helping us to grow and prosper in our local community.

Have a wonderful Independence Day, from all of your friends at CountryBank USA - your independent bank!

Music therapy? Studies show music can lower blood pressure and respiration rates reducing the body's natural response to stress. Music causes the brain to release endorphins (the brain's natural pain reliever) which speeds healing, reduces the chance of infections and improves physical health, speech skills and cognitive functioning!

ARE YOUR SAVINGS BONDS
STILL EARNING INTEREST?

It's important to periodically check your bonds to make sure that they're still earning interest. This is especially true for Series E bonds and savings notes since you don't receive regular interest payments from the Treasury. The following will help you determine if your bonds have stopped earning interest.

The following savings bonds no longer earn interest:

E
  SERIES ISSUE DATE
  May 1941 through June 1961
and
December 1965 through June 1971

  H June 1952 through June 1971
HH January 1980 through June 1981
  A,B,C,D,F,G,J,K All issues
Savings Notes: May 1967 through October 1970
If you have internet access, visit the following website for information on savings bonds: www.savingsbonds.gov . If you don't-stop in at CountryBank USA and we will help you look it up.

SYTTENDE MAI

Thank you to all who attended our Syttende Mai celebrations in Cando and Devils Lake. We hope you enjoyed all the delicious Norwegian treats and special events. A special thank you to JoAnn Copeland and Cecelia Boe for sharing their talents and knowledge with us.

Speaking of sharing, I want to share this Apple Crisp recipe with you. It is delicious!

Best Ever-Apple Crisp In mixing bowl combine:
1 cup flour
1 cup packed brown sugar
¾ cup old fashioned or quick cooking oats
1 tsp cinnamon

Cut in ½ cup cold butter or margarine until crumbly. Press half into greased 9" square baking pan. Top with 4 cups coarsely chopped peeled apples.

In saucepan combine:     1 cup white sugar
    2 tbsp cornstarch
    1 cup water
    1 tsp vanilla

Cook & stir until thick and clear. Pour this over the apples. Sprinkle with remaining crumb mixture. Bake at 350 for 1 hour or until apples are tender.

TIP: To prevent lumps from developing in sauce, thoroughly combine sugar and cornstarch before adding the water.

When rhubarb is in season I use 1 cup rhubarb and 3 cups apples. Nice variation!
